When people are looking for food travel destinations, Finland is often not the first one on their list. Finland and especially Kuopio certainly deserve more attention in this field: the Kuopio region has been awarded as the European Gastronomical Region in 2020. Kuopio is also known for a quickly developing food scene and food festivals focusing on local ingredients.
We love eating out and love discovering new restaurants and coffee shops in our hometown. Being a small(ish) town, Kuopio has a good selection of good quality restaurants and coffee shops.
We have now listed 10 brilliant places to have a bite in Kuopio - hopefully this inspires you next time you go and eat out!

Our picks in Kuopio
If you are Looking for a trendy and popular lunch restaurant in Kuopio, don’t look any further. Urban focuses only on serving lunch and hardly never disappoints (they occasionally host dinners, too - if you fancy having dinner with them, be quick as they tend to sell out REALLY fast).
The restaurant is partly run by Finnish Top Chef winner Anssi Kantelinen, to add a bit of excitement to your lunch break.
Urban, Puijonkatu 15
Are you planning a date? Or have coffee plans with friends? Kaneli must be the cutest Café in Kuopio and is known to have delicious snacks and lunch options. It’s the perfect spot to spend time with your loved ones in a romantic setting.
Kaneli is not overly big so be prepared to wait for your favourite table.
Kaneli, Kauppakatu 22
If you are German, this is probably the closest you can get to your homeland in Kuopio. Although the menu is not actually German, the restaurant serves a good selection of beers and a menu that consists of traditional, yummy pub food (don’t try to diet here). A relaxed pub, no seriousness. Remember to try their famous wings!
Booking in advance is strongly recommended!
Bierstube, Kasarmikatu 5-7
If you are looking for a relaxed place to chill with friends, Hygge Bro is the right address.
Decorated in a cosy Nordic way in the centralmost location of Kuopio (as locals say - “mualiman napa”), they are known to avoid the fine dining trend and serve easy yet filling dishes. A good option to enjoy lunch or have a creative break from work with coffee and cake.
HyggeBro, Kauppakatu 28
If you love Mexican and Central American food as much as we do, Panza is definitely worth a visit. Although Kuopio is not exactly Mexico, you can still find tasty tortillas and tacos in the very centre of the town.
Panza serves Central American inspired street food in a cool and hip way, making it one of the trendiest eateries in town. Don’t forget to try their cocktails!
Panza, Ajurinkatu 26
If you fancy a live music experience together with nice food, King’s Crown is a top choice for you. They often have local musicians performing, and music loving food lovers have found the restaurant really well.
King’s Crown supports local producers and therefore many ingredients come from the Kuopio region, which is certainly a nice trend in today’s restaurant business.
They are also known to have one of the best (champagne) brunches in Kuopio! Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Kings Crown, Kuninkaankatu 22
Trattoria Sorrento is a true piece of Italy in the heart of Kuopio, and the owners are really putting an effort for customer experience. It’s easy forget you are actually not to too far from the Arctic Circle and most definitely not anywhere near the bay of Naples! They also serve you in the local Savo dialect.
We have a confirmation from a food loving Tuscan visitor that the restaurant, being outside Italy, serves food committed to high Italian standards.
Trattoria Sorrento, Snellmanninkatu 22
Kuopio is pretty good when it comes to ethnic food. Thai food selection got better with Samruai’s arrival to town, and based on our experience, the food is excellent.
Samruai notes that “the food is made by Thai chefs, with recipes they’ve learnt from their mothers and relatives”. Foods of Thailand’s Isaan region are also on the list, making it a little bit different from many Thai restaurants outside Thailand. A little piece of Thailand in central Kuopio.
Samruai, Kauppakatu 63
Mount Sherpa is the favourite of many locals in Kuopio. Known for their Nepalese dishes and friendly service, many go back time after another. Our founder Tuukka is a big fan and names their "Palak Paneer" dish as his favourite.
Tucked away in a quiet side street near Kuopio's market place, Mount Sherpa is a quiet and cosy destination for foodies looking for something a bit different in Kuopio. Perfect for having a dinner with friends.
Mount Sherpa, Käsityökatu 25
Puijon Torniravintola (Restaurant at the Puijo Tower)
If you are a fan of fine dining in a truly exciting Nordic setting, we advise you to visit Puijo Tower’s restaurant at the highest point of Kuopio. The Puijo tower is naturally one of the main attractions in Kuopio, and the restaurant at the top of the tower is known for their fine dining experience.
The tower restaurant is recommended when you have visitors (it's the place to impress the parents!) - they can see the best of Kuopio while enjoying Finland on their platter, too. Often benefiting from local Finnish ingredients, the menu is certainly an experience, for us Finns, too. Not the cheapest in Kuopio, but worth a visit.
Puijo Tower Restaurant, Puijontie 135
